BJJ Concept: Always Improve Your Position
November 11th, 2008 . by adminAside from pitting a strength against a weakness, another fundamental concept in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is one of the ever-improving position. That is, a BJJplayer will always work to improve his or her position, even if it doesn’t necessarily mean ending the fight.
So if a BJJ player is on bottom (in their own guard), they will attack or attempt to sweep their opponent (get in their opponent’s guard). If in guard, they will attempt to “pass the guard” to get past their opponent’s legs, which are a major component of defense in BJJ.
Once past the legs, or in side control, the player will attempt to gain knee on belly or mount position. At any opportunity, a BJJ player might attempt to take the back, a very dominant position for finishing a fight. You can see these principles in action by watching BJJ gi videos.
