Piston driven espresso makers uses manual power to pressurized the hot water, this is where the phrase “pull” a shot comes from. Pump driven espresso maker are the same as Piston driven ones just that this is driven by a motor. This function makes it popular in coffee bars in the past as it doesn’t require that much man power to operate it. As technology improves, modern espresso machine just requires a push of a button and a minute for a hot cup of espresso.
