At over $2 trillion a years the United States is currently spending more than four times as much on health care than it does on defense and has a health care system which is a mess and millions of its citizens who cannot afford the cost of individual health insurance. So why is the American health care system in such a mess? The answer is simply that the health care system is poorly managed, is inefficient, suffers from grossly excessive administration costs, provides inappropriate care and is rife with waste and fraud. In short, it is a bit like Congress. We pay our representatives handsomely to manage the country and yet all too many of them repay us very poorly and are more interested in themselves that their constituents. The only shame is that they of course are more than adequately covered when it comes to their own health insurance.
